The book of Romans is a profound exposition of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
In this blog post, we delve into one of its most significant passages, Romans 3:21-30, and explore the profound lessons it holds for us today.
The Righteousness of God Revealed (Romans 3:21-22)
“But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe.”
In these verses, Paul reveals a significant shift. The righteousness of God is now manifested apart from the law, yet it is testified by the law and the prophets.
This righteousness is not earned but given and is accessible to all who believe in Jesus Christ.
Paul goes ahead to highlight how that justification unto salvation is received as indicated below:
1. Acknowledge: All Have Sinned (Romans 3:23)
“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”
Paul reminds us of our universal condition: We have ALL sinned and fallen short of God’s glory.
This verse underscores our need for salvation and sets the stage for God’s solution.
Justification by Faith: A Study of Romans 3:21-30
Righteousness is now revealed apart from the law.
This righteousness is accessible through faith in Jesus Christ.
All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.
We are justified freely by God’s grace.
Redemption comes through Christ Jesus.
God passed over former sins to show his righteousness.
There is no room for boasting because justification comes from faith, not works.
God is the God of both Jews and Gentiles.
There is only one God, who justifies all through faith.
Embrace faith, acknowledge human imperfection, accept grace, forgive past mistakes, avoid boasting, and embrace diversity.
2. Believe: Justification through Grace (Romans 3:24)
“And all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.”
Here, Paul introduces the concept of justification, a legal term implying a change in status. Through God’s grace, we are justified, or declared righteous, not by our works, but through the redemption brought by Jesus Christ.
3. Receive: Propitiation through Faith (Romans 3:25-26)
“God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood—to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished— he did it to demonstrate his righteousness, to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.”
Paul explains how God demonstrates His righteousness: by presenting Jesus as a sacrifice of atonement for our sins.
This act of propitiation is received through faith, underscoring the importance of faith in our justification.
The Law of Faith (Romans 3:27-30)
“Where, then, is boasting? It is excluded. Because of what law? The law that requires works? No, because of the law of faith. For we maintain that a person is justified by faith apart from the works of the law.”
Paul concludes by introducing the “law of faith.” In this, boasting is excluded because justification comes through faith, not works. This is a reaffirmation of the central Christian doctrine of justification by faith alone.
In Romans 3:21-30, Paul presents a profound message of hope and redemption. Despite our sins and shortcomings, God’s righteousness is available to us through faith in Jesus Christ.
That is a powerful reminder of God’s grace and the transformative power of faith.

Reflection
The book of Romans, written by the Apostle Paul, is a theological masterpiece that presents the Gospel of Christ systematically and comprehensively. In our lesson, Paul explained that righteousness from God is now revealed apart from the law, although the law and the prophets bear witness to it.
This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe.
Key Points to remember from Romans 3:21-30
- Righteousness Apart from the Law (v. 21-22): The righteousness of God has been made manifest apart from the law. This righteousness is accessible through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe.
- All Have Sinned (v. 23): There is no distinction between people, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. This verse emphasizes the universal need for salvation.
- Justification by His Grace (v. 24-25): Believers are justified by God’s grace as a gift, through the redemption that’s in Christ Jesus. God put forward Jesus as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith.
- God’s Righteousness and Forbearance (v. 25-26): God had passed over former sins, showing his righteousness, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.
- Boasting is Excluded (v. 27-28): There is no room for boasting because a person is justified by faith apart from work.
Daily Application of the Lesson:
- Embrace Faith: Just as righteousness is accessible through faith in Jesus Christ, we should apply this principle in our daily lives by trusting in God’s plan for us.
- Acknowledge Human Imperfection: Recognize that everyone, including ourselves, falls short and makes mistakes. This understanding can foster empathy and patience towards others.
- Accept Grace: Understand that we are justified by God’s grace, not by our works. This can alleviate the pressure to be perfect and encourage us to accept God’s love and forgiveness.
- Forgive Past Mistakes: Just as God passed over former sins, we should also learn to forgive ourselves and others for past mistakes, focusing on growth and improvement instead.
- Avoid Boasting: Remember that our achievements are not grounds for boasting, but opportunities to give thanks for God’s grace. Cultivate humility in success.
- Embrace Diversity: Just as God is the God of all, we should embrace and respect diversity, recognizing the inherent value in every individual.
