Living in Power and Purpose
Empowered for Mission By the Holy Spirit
What is your mission on earth? The believers in the early church seemed to understand that we all have a mission and purpose to fulfill. Join us as we explore the person of the Holy Spirit and His role in empowering Christians in their mission here on earth as we explore what the Lord is telling us through the book of the Acts of the apostles.
Scripture: Acts 2:1-4
The Holy Spirit is a central figure in the Christian faith, often referred to as the Comforter, Advocate, and Spirit of Truth.
But, the Holy Spirit is not a figure. He is a person- meaning we can interact with Him and get to know Him.
As we read Acts, the very first encounter we have is the Holy Spirit.
So, Who is the Holy Spirit?
The Holy Spirit is God. He is the third person of the Godhead and Jesus refers to Him as another helper John 14:16.
In this text of scripture Jesus calls Him another of the same kind. Jesus Himself was the first Helper to the disciples during His earthly ministry. However, He assured them that after His departure, He would send another Helper, who is the Holy Spirit, to be with them forever.
This indicates that the Holy Spirit would continue the work that Jesus began, providing the same kind of help, guidance, and empowerment to believers.
The day of Pentecost marks a significant event where the Holy Spirit’s presence was profoundly manifested. This momentous occasion not only fulfilled Jesus’ promise to His disciples but also marked the birth of the church’s mission to spread the gospel.
The Promise and Fulfillment
Before His ascension, Jesus promised His disciples that they would receive power when the Holy Spirit came upon them (Acts 1:8). This promise was fulfilled on the day of Pentecost, as described in Acts 2:1-4.
The event was not merely a display of supernatural power but a fulfillment of God’s promise to pour out His Spirit on all people. It signified the beginning of a new era in which the Holy Spirit would play a vital role in the life of every believer and the mission of the church.

The Work of the Holy Spirit in the Life of a Believer
The Holy Spirit empowers believers in several key ways.
I. Service to the Church
The Spirit provides spiritual gifts that enable us to serve the body of Christ and fulfill our unique callings. The Holy Spirit gives gifts for the common good and the edification of the church. For example through teaching, healing, encouragement or administration Romans 12:3-8.
Reflection point: As believers, one mission we have is to serve the body of Christ.
II. Excelling in Work and Life
The Holy Spirit is our Comforter and Guide. In times of uncertainty or difficulty, the Spirit provides peace and guidance, reminding us of God’s promises and leading us in truth. The presence of the Holy Spirit assures us of God’s constant companionship and love.
Reflection point: As believers, we cannot do life without the wisdom of the Holy Spirit.
III. Empowerment to Share the Gospel
The Holy Spirit empowers us for evangelism. Just as the apostles were emboldened to preach the gospel to people of different languages and cultures, the Spirit equips us to share the good news with boldness and clarity. This empowerment extends beyond mere words; it includes the transformation of our lives as a testimony to God’s grace.
Reflection point: The Holy Spirit affirms the assignment of God on our lives through signs, miracles, and wonders. Do you have a testimony of when you saw God’s hand in your life?
The Holy Spirit is not a distant or abstract concept but a person and an active presence in our lives. As believers, we are called to be open to the Spirit’s leading, allowing Him to work through us for God’s glory.
Let us seek a deeper relationship with the Holy Spirit, trusting in His power and guidance as we live out our faith and fulfill the mission entrusted to us.
